TONGONI HERITAGE SITE

Tongoni ruins is an historic site located about 17km
south of Tanga, Tanzania. The ruins of Tongoni lie immediately to the north of
modern day Tongoni village. Remains of the oldest settlement at Tongoni are
mainly located to north and of the ruined large central mosque and tombs, which
notably remains of 14th -15th Century.
Tongoni heritage site encompass the ruin of large
mosque, 40 graves whereby about half of them dates between 14th and
15th C. In addition, the later constitute tombs of various types
such as square pillars, octagonal, square panelled stub pillars at the comer,
and paneled facades style. Moreover, the site comprisesof graves dating to 18th
-19th C.
Among other things, the material retrieved from
excavation include ivory ornaments with a guilloche design, imported potsherd
such as blue and green Islamic monochrome and sgraffiato , local pottery, part
of comb, and well wrought plaque with a nicely executed Koranic text
