MIKINDANI HERITAGE SITE

The town of Mikindani sits at the southern end of a
small lagoon in the southwest corner of Mikindani Bay; about 50 km from the Ruvuma
River and the modern border between Tanzania and Mozambique. Mikindani heritage
site is an important 19th C historical village. It is popular as one
of slave transit port in the southern Tanzania, receiving slave from the
hinterland and handling destined to Zanzibar, Reunion Island and other places. The
historic town of Mikindani constitutes important history of Arabs and German
domination in southern part of Tanzania, and east African coast as whole.
Mikindani built heritage encompasses the old Boma,
Slave makert, Aga Khan House, the Bank House, Old Prison, Slave Market, Dr Livingstone
House, Governor House, Madukani House, and Mikindani Health Center. Also,Mikindani
historic town constitute of graves of mid 19th C date at various
point of the harbor including Mitengo, Mirunda, and Mvita pwani.
Mikindani’s regional history provides important
information about complex relationship with the developments usually thought to
characterize Swahili archaeology and history. This include the significant
patterns of the first millennium, ranging from initial occupation by mobile
stone-tool using groups, to settlement by iron-using agriculturalists, to the
development of early Swahili culture marked by sailing and Tana/TIW ceramics,
were shared.
